Spalding remains No. 1 as Riverdale Baptist climbs to its highest-ever state ranking

Archbishop Spalding collected every first-place vote to reinforce its ranking as the top team in Maryland this week. Meanwhile, Riverdale Baptist, a school that had never been ranked before 2023, etched its most significant program victory and with it a No. 3 state ranking.

Riverdale Baptist, which was ranked No. 7 last week, jumped to No. 3 after dealing former No. 3 Good Counsel a 28-18 defeat. Riverdale Baptist settles in right behind St. Frances Academy, which nearly downed national Top 10 Duncanville (Texas) before falling 28-24 on a late touchdown.

Spalding, St. Frances, and Riverdale were almost unanimous in the order from the ranking committee. After that, things were not as clear cut. DeMatha ends up at No. 4 this week, followed by Quince Orchard, the highest-ranked public school.

The lone newcomers to this week's rankings are No. 23 Northwest and No. 24 Middletown. Northwest is coming off a 28-0 win over Damascus while Middletown upended previous No. 17 Mergenthaler Vo-Tech 28-6.
